 1. Is Aluma45-M truly compatible with a chromium-free system?
Yes. In fact, Aluma45 Mg-Rich Primers DO NOT WORK when used over chromated pre-treatments. It is designed to completely eliminate ALL CrVI in your paint systems and is optimal over bare metal or chromium-free pre-treatments. Nothing else on the market compares.

A 2012 DOD report testing the Mg-rich primers erroneously concluded that the technology is not an effective substitute for CrVI. The study included the use of a chromate pre-treatment on the bare metal before the application of the Mg-Rich primer, which solidly defeated the purpose of a Cr-free coating system and resulted in Mg-rich coating failure. Because the Mg-Rich Primer is designed to work on bare metal or Cr-free pre-treatment, the failure when used with CrVI pre-treatment is an expected outcome. 

 2. How is it applied?

Aluma45-MTM can be sprayed or brushed on. It is a two-part epoxy polyamide system that requires mixing before using.

 3. How long does the Mg-Rich Primer protect?

With a durable polyurethane topcoat, Aluma45-M protects even in harsh saltwater conditions for 5-10 years, which outperforms even the most durable alternatives. Much like CrVI, the MgRP self-heals when scratched or perforated.


 4. How do I remove the Mg-Rich Primers when it's time to clean and recoat?

Because Aluma45-M is a chromium-free coating, removal and disposal procedures and costs are greatly reduced in comparison to cumbersome and toxic chromium primers. Standard chemical removal or sand-blasting is required, but the hazards of CrVI dust are eliminated.

 5. How do I prepare the surface before before application? 
Surface preparation is key to the success and durability of any coating, and that is true also with the Mg-Rich Primers. After solvent cleaning the surface, these coatings can be applied directly to the metal without a conversion coating, making it easier, faster and more economical than ever before to protect aluminum surfaces.

 6. Do the Mg-Rich Primers protect various aluminum alloys?

Yes. These primers have been tested and proven on several alloys, including 2000, 5000, 6000, and 7000.

 7. Why coat aluminum when it resists corrosion? 
Only pure aluminum is corrosion resistant. Once it is in the alloyed form, it becomes susceptible to attacks from chloride and other corrosive elements. Pure unalloyed aluminum does not have the strength, toughness and/or other desired properties for structural applications. Without a protective coating, the surface forms an oxide layer, begins to dull and eventually deteriorates, causing cracking and other dangerous structural failures. Aluminum structures and vehicles MUST be properly coated for durability.
